Jesse Schell: "Design Outside the Box"

Jesse Schell currently holds the title of Professor of Entertainment Technology (specializing in Game Design) at Carnegie Mellon University. Before that, he was Creative Director at the Walt Disney Imagineering VR Studio, where he worked for seven years as designer, programmer, and manager on several projects for Disney theme parks and DisneyQuest (Disney's chain of VR entertainment centers). He has been lead designer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Buccaneer's Gold, a virtual reality attraction at the DisneyQuest interactive theme park in Orlando, Florida, which won a Thea from the Themed Entertainment Association. 'Carnegie Mellon University Professor, Jesse Schell, dives into a world of game development which will emerge from the popular "Facebook Games" era.'

For the record, I am convinced that he is *not* really excited about it (as the general buzz over the net seemed to understand), but quite the opposite, he is throwing a fist of alert at the chin of the current generation of game designers and developers.

  1. Wait, so apparently humanity is so unable to self-actualize that the concept of a totalitarian "points system" is GOOD?

  2. I would rephrase:

The apparent idea of humanity so unable to self-actualize creates the concept of a totalitarian "points system" as GOOD.

As commentted in the last part of the post, I think he is very sarcastic in the video, by denoting the described distopia as a funny world.

  3. We are already there to a certain extent. Mycokerewards.com and other similar websites are designed to make us want to buy more so we can get points. The systems described are just more sophisticated.

The thing is that people who understand psychology will always have an advantage over those who don't. Just like there are consumer advocates who point out frauds, what we need are psychological advocates that can point out how we are being manipulated so that people can make better choices.

  4. True, we are already there, and we seem happy to keep on that direction.

I dont know if there is a real need for more psicologycal advise, whats happening is already there for anyone who wants to look.

I mean, even this kind of harsh psico-tricks have been denounced in games like WoW, by no others that respected game designers.
